St. Vrain Creek Restoration Project

St. Vrain Creek Restoration Project Update

Improvements to the St. Vrain to improve flood resiliency, protect properties, and increase stream health are well underway.
Construction started in mid-November in Reach 3 on the North Fork, with retaining wall and floodplain bench construction from Meadow Park to the sewer crossing east of 4th Avenue. Work in Reach 3 is nearing completion, with instream habitat work and topsoil to prepare for planting. Planting and seeding operations will occur this spring/early summer as soon as soil, runoff, and weather conditions permit.

Construction is ramping up now in Reach 1. A focus for Reach 1 is lowering the sewer crossing, to reduce water surface elevations and improve stream and fishery health, including fish passage. Construction in Reach 2, from the confluence downstream to below the Supply Ditch diversion, will run concurrently with Reach 1. Initial work in Reach 2 is large-scale earthwork, to shape overflow channels to safely convey frequent floodwaters through the area east of the treatment plant. Work in Reaches 1 and 2 will end with instream habitat improvements and topsoil/soil amendment preparations for spring plantings.

Wapiti 2 Burn at Heil Valley Ranch

Boulder County Parks and Open Space and the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Wildland Fire Management Program plan to conduct a Wapiti 2 prescribed burn at Heil Valley Ranch, between February 14 and 20.

Seventy acres of the 270-acre project will be burned during this timeframe, with one to three days of ignition planned. Heil Valley Ranch will be closed completely during active ignition days. The exact closure dates will be dependent on weather conditions. Specific areas will reopen as soon as it’s deemed safe to do so by fire personnel.
