Town of Lyons being targeted for property crimes
Information from Boulder County Sheriff's Office
Over the last several days, the Town of Lyons has been targeted by thieves looking to steal and trespass vehicles. Suspects are coming into town during late night to early morning hours. There have been two vehicles stolen in town since October 30, 2023. These vehicles were left unlocked with the keys inside the vehicles.
The Boulder County Sheriff's Office urges town residents to lock your vehicles and homes, do not leave keys or spare keys inside your vehicles, do not leave anything of value in your vehicles, and report suspicious people or activity immediately to the Boulder County Sheriff's Office. Call 911 for emergencies or the non-emergency number, 303-441-4444.
Here are a few ways to make you and your property safer and unattractive to criminals:
Keep all doors, garage doors, gates, and windows closed and locked.
Always keep your vehicles locked when driving or parked.
Roll windows up when your vehicle is parked.
Do not keep keys/spare keys or things of value inside your vehicle. This includes firearms and garage door openers.
Do not leave running vehicles unattended, especially in the morning, to warm them up. The common term for this is "Puffing" your car. It is actually against the law, and you could receive a ticket. The only exception is vehicles with remote start systems.
Install an alarm system or buy anti-theft devices for your vehicle and trailers.
If approached while in your vehicle, do not roll the windows down or open a door.
For home safety, remember these tips:
Interior lights put on timers that turn on/off at random times during low light hours.
Install exterior cameras or alarm systems. Even alarm signs outside your house is a deterrent.
Outside lighting/motion lights are a deterrent.
Dogs are a significant deterrent. They will not only wake you up if they hear/see anything, but many will likely scare off intruders. A "Beware of Dog" sign can deter intruders.
Avoid setting patterns in your day-to-day activities.
Don't allow mail/packages to pile up.
Make your house appear as if someone is home all the time.
If you see a suspicious person outside your home or vehicle, call 911, turn lights on inside/outside, and activate the panic button on your vehicle's key fob. DO NOT try to intervene or confront them and stay inside your house.
The Boulder County Sheriff's Office wants to keep you and the town safe and deter criminals from targeting the town. In order to do this, we need your help to not make your property or home easy targets. Report anything you feel is suspicious immediately.
If it doesn't look or feel right, report it.
