Old Man Winter

Returns this week

As you may have already learned, cold temperatures will converge in our area for a 36 hour stretch beginning late in the afternoon on Wednesday, December 21st, to officially welcome winter in the northern hemisphere. The current predicted high temp for Lyons is 1 Degree (f), overnight low of -16(f).

If you are traveling for the holidays, please try and fuel up before the temperatures drop later on Wednesday and check to make sure your vehicle has fuel, blankets, emergency supplies, etc.

If you are concerned about your pipes freezing, you might consider keeping your cabinet doors open underneath your sinks. In addition, allow for a slight drip of hot and cold faucets in kitchen and bath.

Finally, for our domestic animals, please don't let pets outside for too long with the forecasted cold temperatures and wind chills.

One Way

Changes to Block of Railroad Ave

One Way Only - Westbound - from 2nd Ave to 3rd Ave

As many of you may know, Railroad Ave, from 2nd Ave to 3rd Ave (in front of Lyons Fire Station) has been closed due to the large Longmont Water pump station project. In conjunction with upcoming Broadway project and multi-modal improvements, the Board of Trustees approved changing the block to one-way only, westbound direction for this block only of Railroad Avenue. Public works staff has completed installing the required signage. There are flags warning drivers of this new vehicle pattern. This one block of Railroad Ave reopened to vehicles on Monday, with one way, westbound direction only.

In addition, there will be a new entrance cut to enter the parking lot from 3rd Ave. The contractor plans to add a new entrance off of 3rd Ave (across from the post office) with the entrance from Railroad Ave closed off.

Wastewater Usage and Rates

Fees are scheduled to increase in 2023

Wastewater (sewer) quantity use and monthly charges for residential customers are billed using their winter Average Water Consumption (AWC). AWC is based on average water use during the December, January and February utility billing months and provides a basis for calculating your wastewater charges during the rest of the year.

The Town averages the use shown on these three months of billings to estimate the amount of average monthly water used inside each home which then enters the sanitary sewer system, as wastewater. This winter usage determines the monthly wastewater
usage for each month of the year and is calculated annually, every March.

The new base rate for residential consumers with metered Town-provided water service will increase to $24.45 per month (from $22.65) for wastewater along with the average winter consumption increasing to $14.60 (from $13.50) per 1,000 gallons. Using AWC, the typical residential household is Lyons is billed for 3,000 gallons of wastewater monthly.
