Operation Mighty Goats

Operation Mighty Goats

Tackling weed and fire mitigation organically!

The Town is working with two goat entities to help with weed mitigation. There is a herd of about 10 goats working/eating in and near the flood buyout areas near Park St in the confluence. This herd has been in town for almost two weeks and has another week or two of weeding! And they are the Mighty Goats, named after Disney characters. There will be another herd of 35-40 goats arriving after Labor Day and working the area west of Horizon Drive, near the playground.

Did you know goats will navigate even the most difficult terrain to consume any vegetation on wildfire-prone land? And they are cute too!

St. Vrain Valley School District

Schools back in session

Please remember to slow down in school zones and look out for children. Always yield to pedestrians and stop for them in our crosswalks. As school resumes,  please remember that the parking lots and athletic fields are reserved for students during school and for after school activities. No dogs are ever allowed on school property and fields.

Local Bridge Repairs

CDOT Lyons Bridge Repairs on Highway 7

Work began earlier this week with CDOT and Contractor Structures, Inc. regarding repairs to the bridge on Colorado Highway 7 over North Saint Vrain Creek in the Town of Lyons. These bridge repairs are part of an existing project to rehabilitate two bridges in Boulder County.

During the initial phase of work, crews will replace the sidewalks and make bridge deck repairs. This is expected to last for approximately four weeks. Work will begin on the northbound (east side) of the bridge and switch to the southbound (west side) once the east side is complete. Two-way bridge traffic will be down to one lane, managed by temporary traffic signals. The second phase of work consists of scour removal and riprap protection with no traffic impacts to CO 7. This work will last for an additional three weeks.

Bears and Trash
Remain Bear Aware!

Hyperphagia - a bear's time to pack on pounds

Colorado Parks and Wildlife reminds people to remain bear aware during hyperphagia - a bear's time to pack on pounds  in preparation for winter.

Black bears in Colorado are entering hyperphagia and will spend up to 20 hours a day trying to eat more than 20,000 calories to fatten up for winter. As bears start to prepare for hibernation and hunt for food, you may see more bear activity in Lyons.

Most conflicts between people and bears can be traced to easily accessible human food and your trash, as a bear’s natural drive to eat can overcome its fear of humans. When bears become too comfortable around humans, they can destroy property or even become a threat to human safety.

CPW’s most reported conflicts are from attractants such as trash, bird seed, pet food, and barbecue grills. Removing these and keeping your trash secure can help.
