Thank you, to everyone who participated in the recent Affordable Housing Survey. The Board of Trustees reviewed the results at their regular meeting on July 18, 2016.

LaVern Johnson Park

Construction for the LaVern M. Johnson Park, previously Meadow Park, is still underway, and due to contractual and other complications, the anticipated public opening of the park has been rescheduled for September 2016. More details on grand opening to follow.

Lyons Primary Planning Area Master Plan Workshop

Apple Valley Area (Phase III)

Next Public Planning Workshop: Tonight, July 19, 2016

Continuing next week, the Town of Lyons, along with the hired consultant team, will move forward with its final series of public meetings for the Lyons Primary Planning Area (LPPA) Master Plan.  
As part of this planning process, the LPPA has been broken out into three small areas: the Eastern Corridor & Gateway (Phase I -completed); South St. Vrain Area (Phase II); and Apple Valley (Phase III). Phase III will include 3 public workshops focused on the Apple Valley Planning Area. The LPPA includes parcels that are currently outside of Town limits, but within an area which has been designated as appropriate for future annexation and development according to the Boulder County – Town of Lyons 2012 Intergovernmental Agreement.

The workshop on July 18 will be the first workshop in this series.

County-Wide Fire Ban Amended

via Boulder County Sheriff's Office
On Sunday, July 17, Sheriff Pelle amended the previously implemented fire ban to only ban open-burning in the mountains. 

The amended fire ban prohibits:

1) Building, maintaining, attending or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire on private and public lands in the mountain areas. This includes charcoal grills and barbecues, coal and wood burning stoves and sheepherder’s stoves and includes use in developed camping and picnic grounds. EXCEPTIONS: Devices using pressurized liquid or gas (stoves, grills or lanterns) that include shut-off valves are permitted when used in an area at least three feet or more from flammable material such as grasses or pine needles.
2) Smoking. EXCEPTIONS: Within an enclosed vehicle, trailer or building.
3) Welding or operating acetylene or other torch with open flame.
4) Operating or using any internal combustion engine (e.g. chainsaw, generator, ATV) without a spark arresting device properly installed, maintained and in effective working order meeting either: a) Department of Agriculture, Forest Service Standard 5100-1a; or b) Appropriate Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) recommended practice J335(b) and J350(a). 36 CFR § 261.52(j).
5) Operating a chainsaw without an approved spark arresting device as described in Prohibition #4, a chemical pressurized fire extinguisher (8 oz. capacity by weight or larger and kept with the operator), and a round point shovel with an overall length of at least 35 inches readily available for use.
6) Using an explosive. This includes but is not limited to fuses or blasting caps, fireworks, rockets, exploding targets, and tracers or incendiary ammunition.
7) Possessing or using a motor vehicle off established roads, motorized trails or established parking areas, except when parking in an area devoid of vegetation within 10 feet of the vehicle in the mountain area of Boulder County.
Summer Watering

Summer Lawn Watering Guidelines

As the hottst months of the year are upon us, it is important to be mindful of watering lawns and vegetation, to not only conserve water through efficient practices, but also to save money on your water bill. 

Below are two guidelines to refer to when watering, read full list here.

Wait to Water

Don't turn on your sprinkler too early in the season. Leaving lawns dormant longer saves water. Hand-water trees as needed when dry conditions persist.

Water Twice a Week; Make Turf Drought-Tolerant

Water deeply twice each week, in the early morning hours, and supplement with rain to make grass roots grow deeper and go longer without water. For sprinkler systems, cycle run times to prevent run-off. Instead of setting a zone to run for fifteen minutes, change it to water for five minutes once an hour for three hours.

Mosquito Pool in Longmont Tests Positive for West Nile Virus

Boulder County Public Health has confirmed that mosquitoes in a mosquito pool in Longmont have tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV). The positive pool came from a trap located at the Shores-Concord Way in northwest Longmont. Positive mosquito pools have also been confirmed in Larimer County this year.

Symptoms of the virus include fever, extreme fatigue, headache, body aches, and occasionally can also include skin rashes and swollen lymph nodes. Generally, symptoms appear 3 to 14 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. Anyone who experiences these symptoms should consult their health care providers.

Boulder County Public Health officials urge residents to take necessary precautions to protect themselves. Keep safe this summer, and remember the 4Ds:

  1. Use DEET-enhanced insect repellent or alternative.
  2. DRESS in long sleeves and pants.
  3. Avoid the outdoors from DUSK until DAWN.
  4. DRAIN standing water outside your home. 

Generally, the mosquito season extends from late April until mid-October, with the end usually signaled by the first freeze in the fall. 

As of July 13, there have been three human case of West Nile virus reported in Colorado in Bent County, Douglas County, and Larimer County. In 2015, there were 11 cases of the disease in Boulder County, 101 cases in Colorado, and 2,060 nationally.

CDOT: Summer Work on US 34 Canyon Public Meeting

Wednesday, July 20

CDOT will be hosting a public meeting on July 20, which will consist of a formal presentation to educate the public about summer construction activities and lane closures along US 34, and clarify about the traffic closures associated with work beginning in October, as well as an overview of the entire project.
