Single Hauler Pay-As-You-Throw
Monday, October 21 Board of Trustees Meeting
On October 21, the Board of Trustees will consider a recommendation from the Sustainable Futures Commission for a Single Hauler Pay-As-You-Throw (PAYT) program for the Town of Lyons. Included in the presentation will be an assessment of the bids submitted by haulers, from which the Board will determine whether or not to move forward. The Board of Trustees will hold a special public comment opportunity at the October 21 meeting.
There will not be a resolution presented on this topic.
The Single-Hauler PAYT program is a waste strategy that sets residential waste collection rates based on the amount of trash going into the landfill. Greater quantities of trash result in higher prices at the landfill. In order to make the program financially sustainable, the Town would require single-family residential units to use a single hauler for waste removal. To reduce the amount going to the landfill, the program would incorporate curbside recycling and compost services, as part of the hauler’s proposal.
Single-Hauler programs are intended to maximize diversion from landfills while simultaneously reducing the cost to residents through more efficient economies of scale. Reducing heavy truck traffic on local roads, and reducing emissions, is an added benefit.Join us to hear about the program and share your viewpoint with your elected officials.
The meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. on October 21 in the Lyons Town Hall Board Room.
All PAYT material that will be in front of the Board are now available on the October 21 agenda
